From the cellar

We are renowned for the well-kept quality of our real ales which are always from the West Country. At The Royal Oak Inn we love real ale.

Cask Ale

Always available are ales from Dartmoor Brewery, based in nearby Princetown.  The Royal Oak is keeping it local.  Its official, we are the number one customer for Dartmoor Brewery. We sold over 38,000 pints of Dartmoor IPA and Jail Ale in 2014.  That means on average we put on a new keg of Devon’s finest ale every day.  Now you don’t get much fresher than that!

Dartmoor Brewery

Dartmoor IPA is available at the Royal Oak InnJail Ale 4.8%

This is a full bodied mid-brown beer with a well rounded flavour and a sweet Moorish aftertaste.

Meavy Oak Ale, Dartmoor BreweryDartmoor Brewery

Meavy Oak Ale 4.2% abv

Brewed on Dartmoor exclusively for The Royal Oak Inn.

Meavy Oak Ale is the Royal Oak Inn's own beer, specially brewed on our behalf by Dartmoor Brewery.  Meavy Oak Ale is dark and oak coloured with plenty of malt and hops in the aroma. It has a nutty and bittersweet taste. It is made using water from the river Meavy and Dartmoor barley, Challenger and Phoenix English hops.

Guset Ale from Otter Brewery

Otter AmberOtter Amber 4.0% from Otter Brewery in Devon.

Otter Amber was first brewed for the trade in March 2009 as a mid gravity beer to complete the Otter range. Over the last 10 years the 'mid gravity' beer has become popular with drinkers, delivering a reasonable strength with great flavour.

Otter Amber has all the qualities of other Otter beers but with a more complex mix of aroma and flavour.

The special Cara malt and carefully selected hops in Amber deliver a finely balanced bitter flavour, with hints of tropical fruit and spice sometimes even an impression of ginger.

Cider

If you like cider you will love The Royal Oak Inn.

Our ciders are from Symmons, Sandford Orchards, Westons and Countryman Cider, plus occasional guest ciders.

Scrumpy Cider

Scrumpy is cider originally made in the West Country of England, particularly a band through Devon, Somerset, Gloucestershire and Herefordshire. Today the term is used to distinguish locally made ciders produced in smaller quantities and using traditional methods, from mass-produced branded ciders.

The name is believed to derive from the obsolete West Country dialect term "scrimp", meaning a small or withered apple, which also gave rise to the verb "scrump", meaning to steal fruit. It can be applied to basic home made ciders as well as to commercially produced and marketed varieties.

Scrumpy can be dry or sweet, and is usually still rather than carbonated, but may have some degree of carbonation. However, it tends to be stronger in alcohol and more tannic than most commercial ciders. Due to its traditional methods of production, it is usually very pulpy, and resultantly often cloudy in appearance.

We also stock three carbonated ciders - Devon Red 4.5% and Devon Mist 4.5% both from Sandford Orchards as well as Symmons Cider 5.5%.

Thats why we were voted Cider Pub of the year - runner up this year by Plymouth CAMRA

If you like cider you will love The Royal Oak Inn.

Scrumpy Ciders

We have four scrumpy ciders:

Old Kirton 6% is a straw pressed cider from Sandford Orchards.

A still cider, and as dry as it gets. Extremely traditional cider, really good with strong cheese or fatty meats, and superb as a cooking cider. Straw pressing is a craft which is hanging on in very few places, but not to be bettered according to the purists.  Watch the video of Sandford Orchards Straw Pressed Cider.

Proud of British Beer

Proud of British Beer is a short film produced by the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA). It features brewers, both large and small, hop and barley growers, maltsters and industry suppliers. Our concerns are that the continued above inflation increases in beer duty are destroying this indigenous British industry. Pubs, which are an integral part of the fabric of British society are also being forced to close at the rate of 29 per week. This cannot be allowed to continue.
