From the cellar
We are renowned for the well-kept quality of our real
ales which are always from the West Country. At The Royal Oak Inn we

Always available are ales from
Dartmoor Brewery, based in
nearby Princetown. The Royal Oak is keeping it local. Its
official, we are the number one customer for Dartmoor Brewery. We sold over
38,000 pints of Dartmoor IPA and Jail Ale in 2014. That means on average we put on a new
keg of Devon’s finest ale every day. Now you don’t get much fresher than

Our ciders are from Symmons, Sandford Orchards, Westons and Countryman Cider, plus
occasional guest ciders.
Scrumpy is cider originally made in the West Country of England,
particularly a band through Devon, Somerset, Gloucestershire and
Herefordshire. Today the term is used to distinguish locally made ciders
produced in smaller quantities and using traditional methods, from
mass-produced branded ciders.
The name is believed to derive from the obsolete West Country dialect term
"scrimp", meaning a small or withered apple, which also gave rise to the
verb "scrump", meaning to steal fruit. It can be applied to basic home made
ciders as well as to commercially produced and marketed varieties.
Scrumpy can be dry or sweet, and is usually still rather than carbonated,
but may have some degree of carbonation. However, it tends to be stronger in
alcohol and more tannic than most commercial ciders. Due to its traditional
methods of production, it is usually very pulpy, and resultantly often
cloudy in appearance.
We also stock three carbonated ciders - Devon Red 4.5% and Devon Mist 4.5%
both from Sandford Orchards as well as Symmons Cider 5.5%.
Thats why we were voted Cider Pub of the year - runner up this year
by Plymouth CAMRA

cider, and as dry as it gets. Extremely traditional cider, really good with
strong cheese or fatty meats, and superb as a cooking cider. Straw pressing
is a craft which is hanging on in very few places, but not to be bettered
according to the purists. Watch the video of
Sandford Orchards Straw Pressed Cider.
Back Rat Perry and Fannys bramble Blackberry cider
Orchards is a traditional farm business. They are a family
business full of passion for their products and believe that Devon ciders
and juices are the best in the world.
Devon Red 4.5%

quaffable and light balanced cider.

Proud of British Beer
Proud of British Beer is a
short film produced by the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA). It
features brewers, both large and small, hop and barley growers, maltsters
and industry suppliers. Our concerns are that the continued above inflation
increases in beer duty are destroying this indigenous British industry.
Pubs, which are an integral part of the fabric of British society are also
being forced to close at the rate of 29 per week. This cannot be allowed to
